As you break your fast today, take a quick look at the box of dates you reach for, and see whether it is produced in Pakistan.

Because Pakistan is the fifth largest producer of dates in the world.

Annual date production in the country is estimated at 550,000 tonnes, and over 50% of this is produced in Sindh. The rest of it is contributed by Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

About 7 hours away from Karachi lies Khairpur in Sindh (pictured above), a place with the perfect weather conditions to allow for the spread of over 75,000 acre date farms with over 200 varieties of the fruit.

Agriculture is central to Khairpur’s economy and date production plays a vital role in providing people with sustainable livelihoods. The tremendous growth in date farming took place just after the Sukkur barrage was completed in the mid-1930s as the irrigated soil became more conducive for date palm.

The date variety predominantly found in Khairpur is called Aseel. Have you tried it?
